President John Dramani Mahama has terminated the appointment of Dr. Adam Atiku, Chief Executive Officer of the Tamale Teaching Hospital (TTH), following reports of alleged negligence contributing to a recent patient death at the hospital’s Accident and Emergency Ward.

The dismissal comes amidst escalating concerns regarding the deteriorating state of healthcare delivery at the facility, marked by widespread reports of non-functional essential medical equipment.

The President’s decision follows an unannounced visit to TTH by Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, on Tuesday, April 22nd. The visit was part of a broader assessment of healthcare challenges in the Northern Region.

During his inspection, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh expressed grave concern over the number of idle medical machines, despite evidence of payments made to suppliers, indicating potential systemic issues within the hospital’s procurement and maintenance processes.

Further exacerbating the hospital’s operational challenges is the ongoing water crisis in Tamale, which Kwabena Akandoh identified as a significant regional issue requiring urgent presidential intervention.

He emphasized the severe impact of the water shortage on the hospital’s ability to deliver essential services.

Addressing the immediate need to resolve the equipment crisis, Akandoh stated that any action taken by the Ministry of Health would be guided by the priorities outlined by the hospital’s management.

He stressed the importance of collaborative efforts to ensure effective solutions.

Despite the current challenges, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh urged residents to continue utilizing the hospital’s services, assuring them of the government’s commitment to improving healthcare delivery.

“When we finish with them, we will all think through it, because I cannot do it all alone, I have to involve them, and we are thinking through it together. Everybody should remain calm and let us continue to patronize the facility.”
