The Department of Social Welfare and Community Development of the Sefwi Akontombra District Assembly has distributed various livelihood items and cash support to beneficiaries within the district to help improve their living conditions.

The presentation ceremony took place on Thursday, October 30, 2025, at the District Assembly Conference Hall.

The items included 30 deep freezers, 10 fufu pounding machines, 10 sewing machines, and cash support for over 30 individuals.

The District Chief Executive, Joseph Appiah, who supervised the exercise, said the initiative is part of the government’s efforts to improve the lives of Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) across Ghana.

He noted that this program forms part of the government’s broader plan to empower PWDs through livelihood support and social interventions.

According to him, the government, under President John Dramani Mahama, has increased the quota for PWDs under the District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) and introduced policies such as a minimum 5% empowerment quota in public and private sectors and free tertiary education for PWDs.

He explained that the selection and distribution were based on a needs assessment report prepared by the Assembly’s Social Welfare Department to ensure the right support reached those most in need.

“Some beneficiaries received medical support, others were assisted to start or expand their businesses, while a few received educational assistance to continue their studies,” they said.

Joseph Appiah encouraged beneficiaries to use the items productively to improve their lives and become more independent.

He also urged them to inspire others living with disabilities by showing that they can achieve success with hard work and determination.

The beneficiaries expressed their gratitude to the government and the District Assembly for the gesture, describing it as timely and life-changing.

They said the items would go a long way to improve their businesses, income levels, and overall living standards.

“We are thankful for this kind of support. It shows that the government cares about our welfare,” he added.

The event brought smiles and hope to the beneficiaries, many of whom had struggled with unemployment and social exclusion. Officials from the Assembly, traditional leaders, and community members were present to witness the occasion.

The Sefwi Akontombra District Assembly assured that more programs would be rolled out in the coming months to help persons with disabilities live independent and dignified lives.
