The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Aowin in the Western North Region, Mr. Stephen Morcher, is calling for the construction of a dedicated power substation to address the persistent electricity challenges facing the municipality.
In an interview with Sefwinews, Mr. Morcher described the erratic power supply as the โbiggest problemโ facing the area, emphasizing its severe impact on both residents and businesses.
He explained that power outages in Aowin often last between two to three hours, and in some cases, extend to three days, disrupting daily life and economic activities.
โIn recent times, residents were preparing to stage a demonstration against the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) over the situation, but I stepped in to calm the tensions and engaged ECG officials in Aowin,โ he revealed.
โUnfortunately, the outcomes of those engagements have been minimal.โ
According to Mr. Morcher, investigations reveal that the root cause of the power issues lies outside the municipality, with the electricity supply sourced from the Elubo Substation, which also serves surrounding areas.
This, he noted, makes it even more difficult to resolve the situation at the local level.
In light of these challenges, the MCE is advocating for the construction of a substation within the Aowin Municipality to ensure a more stable and reliable electricity supply.
He believes that having a local substation will help eliminate dependency on external sources and drastically reduce power interruptions.
Mr. Morcher also mentioned that he has begun discussions with solar energy companies to explore alternative energy solutions, while efforts continue to lobby for the needed infrastructure.
He appealed to government and stakeholders in the energy sector to consider the urgent need for a substation in Aowin, stressing that stable electricity is critical for development, education, healthcare, and business growth.
โI want to assure the people of Aowin that Iโm doing everything within my power to ensure we find a lasting solution to this electricity crisis. A substation in Aowin is not a luxuryโitโs a necessity,โ he concluded.
