The Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiawso, Kofi Benteh Afful, has revealed plans for a massive redevelopment of the Sefwi Asawinso Market, aimed at turning it into a 24-hour economic hub.
The project, which is being championed under the visionary leadership of former President John Dramani Mahama, seeks to revolutionize the local economy and improve the livelihoods of residents in the constituency and beyond.
The redevelopment of the market is a key component of the National Democratic Congress’s broader economic revitalization strategy, which includes the rollout of a nationwide 24-hour economy policy.
This policy is designed to create jobs, promote business growth, and enhance the competitiveness of local industries through extended operating hours and improved infrastructure.
According to Benteh Afful, the decision to modernize the Sefwi Asawinso Market is based on the critical need to position Sefwi Wiawso municipality as a dynamic commercial center in the Western North Region.
The market, once rebuilt, will feature state-of-the-art facilities to support round-the-clock business operations, ensure safety and hygiene, and attract both local and external investors.
“I’m thrilled to announce that under the visionary leadership of H.E. John Dramani Mahama, we are transforming the Sefwi Asawinso Market into a 24-hour economic hub,” the MP declared in an official statement.
“This initiative will not only boost economic activity but will also create jobs, improve infrastructure, and increase business opportunities for traders, youth, and entrepreneurs across the district.”
He added that the redevelopment would include the construction of modern stalls, improved lighting, security systems, drainage facilities, sanitation infrastructure, and designated spaces for food vendors and transport operators.
The goal is to ensure that both day and night trading can take place in a safe, convenient, and supportive environment.
Kofi Benteh Afful also used the opportunity to express deep gratitude to his constituents for their continued support and urged them to exercise patience and cooperate fully with contractors and authorities throughout the construction phase.
“I appreciate your patience and cooperation during the rebuild process. Let’s work together to make Sefwi Wiawso a thriving economic hub,” he said.
The announcement has been met with excitement and optimism among residents, traders, and traditional leaders, many of whom believe the project will significantly improve the standard of living in the area and reduce unemployment.
Local market women, in particular, have hailed the initiative as a long-awaited relief. Madam Akua Serwaa, a trader at the Asawinso Market, shared her thoughts:
“This market has served us for many years, but the conditions have not been the best. If we get a new, modern market that can operate day and night, our lives will surely improve. We thank the MP and the NDC leadership for this great idea.”
