The illegal mining menace, widely known as galamsey, has intensified in the Akontombra District of the Western North Region, claiming at least four lives in the month of April alone.

The unfortunate incidents occurred in the communities of Ankra, Essase, and Sampa. The victims, who were allegedly engaged in illegal mining, reportedly slipped and fell into dams and pits dug for mining purposes.

Residents are growing increasingly alarmed as galamsey activities continue to wreak havoc on lives and the environment. The destruction of water bodies, cocoa farms, arable lands, and forest reserves in the district has left many concerned about the long-term consequences.

The Sefwi Akontombra District Police Commander, ASP Samuel Atta, confirmed the incidents and revealed that the police have intensified efforts to bring the situation under control.

He outlined several strategic measures being implemented to stop the operations of the illegal miners and restore safety to the affected communities.

Meanwhile, some residents have issued a passionate appeal to the government, calling for urgent intervention.

They stressed that illegal mining is not only endangering lives but is also rapidly destroying valuable natural resources in the district.

Sources close to the situation revealed that efforts to combat galamsey are being undermined by political interference.

It is alleged that some illegal miners are operating with the backing of powerful political figures, making it difficult for law enforcement to crack down effectively.

Residents fear that if authorities do not act decisively and immediately, more lives could be lost, and the district’s ecosystem could suffer irreversible damage.
