The National Chairman of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Johnson Asiedu Nketiah, has voiced strong concerns over the premature scramble for the party’s 2028 flagbearer position, barely three months into President John Dramani Mahama’s administration.
Speaking in an interview on Accra FM on Tuesday, April 15, 2025, Asiedu Nketiah described the early lobbying as both inappropriate and dangerous, warning that it could distract the president and derail the party’s progress.
“It will be very difficult for President Mahama to concentrate under such circumstances. Engaging in such premature competition poses serious risks to the unity and focus of our party,” he said.
He stressed that the NDC’s future success is closely linked to President Mahama’s performance in office.
According to him, any failure on the part of the president could damage the party’s credibility and electoral prospects, regardless of who eventually leads the party into the next election.
“If, in less than three months, people are already fighting over who should be our next flagbearer, how can the president focus on delivering his mandate?” he questioned.
He further cautioned that if the trend continues, it could lead to internal divisions that might cost the NDC dearly in future elections.
“If we don’t take care and President Mahama fails, even if someone is imposed as flagbearer, the party may reject it,” he added.
“We must remain united and focused. The time for such competition will come—but not now.”
