The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, has raised alarm over the rampant power theft in the Northern Region, particularly within the Greater Tamale Metropolis.

Speaking on the issue, the Minister revealed that more than 50 percent of the country’s total power theft cases are recorded in the Northern Region alone.

He further disclosed that over 70 percent of residents in the Greater Tamale Metropolis are engaged in illegal electricity connections, contributing significantly to the losses faced by the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).

According to John Jinapor, these illegal activities have led to millions of cedis in revenue losses for NEDCo, severely impacting efforts to ensure stable and sustainable power supply in the area.

He emphasized the need for urgent measures to tackle the situation, calling for collaboration between stakeholders and stricter enforcement to curb the growing menace of power theft in the region.
