A Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Paul Baffoeโ€‘Bonnie, will assume the duties of Acting Chief Justice following the suspension of Chief Justice Gertrude Sackey Torkornoo.

Justice Baffoeโ€‘Bonnie, who joined the Supreme Court in June 2008 after being appointed by President John Agyekum Kufuor, is the Courtโ€™s longestโ€‘serving member.

His assumption of the Acting Chief Justice role complies with Article 144(6) of the 1992 Constitution, which provides that the most senior Supreme Court Justice shall perform the duties of Chief Justice whenever that office is vacant or the substantive Chief Justice is unable to carry out her functions.

The Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo, has been officially suspended from office after a prima facie case was established against her, stemming from multiple petitions alleging misconduct.

The suspension follows the submission of three separate petitions to President John Dramani Mahama, who, in accordance with constitutional provisions, referred the matter to the Council of State for advice.

The decision, taken in accordance with Article 146(6) of the 1992 Constitution and in consultation with the Council of State, was made public on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.

Meanwhile, President Mahama has instituted a five-member committee in compliance with Article 146(6) to probe the matter.

The committee is composed as follows:

1. Justice Gabriel Scott Pwamang, Justice of the Supreme Court  โ€“ Chairman
2. Justice Samuel Kwame Adibu-Asiedu, Justice of the Supreme Court โ€“ Member
3. Daniel Yaw Domelevo (Former Auditor-General) โ€“  Member
4. Major Flora Bazwaanura Dalugo (Ghana Armed Forces) โ€“ Member
5. Professor James Sefah Dzisah (Associate Professor, University of Ghana) โ€“ Member.โ€
