A 29-year-old man who allegedly impersonated a military officer has been arrested in Bolgatanga for defrauding unsuspecting individuals with false promises of enlisting them into the Ghana Armed Forces.

The accused, identified as Jeffery Solomon Darko, was taken into custody by personnel of the 11 Mechanised Battalion around 2:00 p.m. on April 16, following a tip-off.

Security sources say the arrest was made after Darko reportedly tried to deceive a potential recruit (identity withheld) by pretending to be a legitimate officer.

Darko is said to have introduced himself as a Warrant Officer Class One affiliated with the 3rd Infantry Battalion.

He allegedly demanded $150 or the Ghanaian cedi equivalent to “process” the recruitment. The victim is believed to have paid GHC1,000 to him.

When he was arrested, authorities discovered two mobile phones and the GHC1,000 suspected to be the payment he had received from the victim. Darko has since been handed over to the Bolgatanga District Police for ongoing investigations and potential legal action.

The Ghana Armed Forces continues to advise the public to avoid engaging with individuals offering military recruitment services through unofficial means.

Citizens are encouraged to report any suspicious dealings to the nearest police station or military post.
