A heartbreaking incident unfolded on Thursday morning in the Suaman District of the Western North Region, as a 38-year-old Okada rider, affectionately known as Gayito, tragically drowned in the Bia River while heroically assisting stranded travellers to cross the dangerously flooded Dadiesoโ€“Kwasuo road.

According to eyewitness accounts, recent heavy rains had caused the Bia River to overflow its banks, transforming it into a fast-moving torrent. The road, which connects communities in the district, became impassable, stranding several commuters.

In a bid to help, Gayito took it upon himself to ferry people across the rising waters. However, during one of his attempts, he reportedly lost his footing and was swept away by the strong current.

Despite immediate rescue efforts by bystanders and officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), only some of the individuals he was helping were rescued.

After hours of intense search by local authorities, emergency responders, and concerned residents, Gayitoโ€™s lifeless body was eventually found downstream, bringing sorrow and closure to the grieving community.

The incident has sent shockwaves through the Suaman area, with residents mourning the loss of a man many described as selfless, courageous, and committed to helping others even in the face of danger.

Authorities are urging residents to exercise extreme caution and avoid attempting to cross flooded areas as the rains persist.
