The Western North Regional Minister, Wilbert Petty Brentum, has introduced a new mathematics initiative aimed at improving studentsโ€™ problem-solving skills across Junior High Schools in the region.

Speaking at the WATICO Demonstration Junior High School during the Western North Regional Health Directorateโ€™s stakeholders engagement on the HPV Vaccine, the Minister outlined the initiative, which encourages students to solve at least one mathematics problem daily.

โ€œI want every student to start today โ€” solve one maths problem each day, record it, and show it to your teacher. At the end of each month, we will identify the student who has solved the most questions and reward them. If the month has 30 days, I expect you to solve 30 questions,โ€ he said.

Mr. Brentum revealed that he plans to personally assess the studentsโ€™ progress and even ask some to solve their own selected questions during his visits.

โ€œIf you can solve it correctly, I can reward you โ€” even up to 2,000 cedis,โ€ he assured the students, sparking excitement among them.

He further explained that the program will begin as a pilot project at WATICO Demonstration JHS before being extended to other schools in the Western North Region.

In addition, the Minister disclosed that his office is expected to hold a stakeholdersโ€™ meeting next week to work on the modalities and determine major rewards for outstanding students and schools that perform exceptionally in the program.

According to him, the initiative is designed to make mathematics more engaging and to encourage consistency in practice, which is key to mastering the subject.

Mr. Brentum expressed optimism that the program would help raise academic standards and build confidence among students in mathematics, a subject many find challenging.

He concluded by commending teachers and students for their dedication and encouraged them to embrace the initiative wholeheartedly.
