The Western North Regional Minister, Wilbert Petty Brentum, has strongly refuted claims that he is involved in illegal mining activities within the region.
The Royal Family of Sefwi Afere in the Bodi District alleged on Peace FM’s midday news that the Regional Minister was promoting galamsey in the community.
According to him, Mr. Brentum allegedly brought some individuals into the area to engage in illegal mining, but they intervened to stop them.
They further claimed that, due to their actions, the Minister reported them to the Western North Regional Police Commander, leading to attempts to have him arrested — forcing him to seek refuge in the bush for fear of being detained.
Reacting to the allegations on Peace FM’s 6:00 PM news, Wilbert Petty Brentum vehemently denied the accusations, describing them as baseless and misleading.
He stated that he has never been involved in galamsey since his appointment by the President.
According to him, the individuals he spoke on behalf of were into hard rock mining, which he emphasized is a legitimate and environmentally responsible form of mining, unlike galamsey, which destroys river bodies and forest reserves.
The Minister further cautioned against labeling all forms of mining as galamsey, noting that the country must differentiate between illegal mining and responsible mining practices.
He added that hard rock mining has the potential to create employment opportunities for the youth, reduce unemployment, and contribute to local development.
“The youth need jobs. If we encourage hard rock mining under proper regulations, it can employ many young people. For me, I will always support responsible mining that safeguards our environment,” he concluded.
