Bibiani Old Town residents appeal for resettlement due to health concerns

Residents of Bibiani Old Town, a mining community in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai municipality of the Western North Region, are calling on Asante Gold Corporation to resettle them due to severe health concerns.

The residents stated that the mining activities, particularly blasting, are taking a devastating toll on their health and making life unbearable.

Speaking to Ogyeahoho TV, the residents indicated that the frequent blasting has resulted in structural damage to their homes, causing cracks in walls and foundations. The blasts also generate massive dust clouds, which settle on their homes, food, and water sources, posing serious health risks.

The residents reported cases of respiratory problems, including asthma and bronchitis, which they attribute to the inhalation of dust and other pollutants.

Furthermore, the residents alleged that the mining activities have contaminated their water sources, making it undrinkable. They claimed that the company’s operations have also led to the destruction of their farmlands, leaving them without a source of income.

“We can’t continue living in fear of our lives. The blasting is getting worse, and we’re worried about our health and safety. We’re appealing to the company to resettle us to a safe location.” said one resident.

The Asante Gold Bibiani Limited has been operating in the area for several years, but the residents claim that the company has failed to address their concerns and provide adequate compensation for the damage caused by their operations.
