About five different shops and at least a car have been razed down completely at Sefwi Bekwai on Friday evening.
The fire is said to have started around 8 pm but was finally brought under control by personnel from the Fire Service who arrived at the scene when almost everything has been burnt to ashes.
Our checks indicate that it took about 2 hours before the personnel from the Fire Service arrive from Sefwi Wiawso to come to their aid. However, their timely intervention prevented the fire from spreading to the surrounding houses. It is unclear yet what may have caused the fire.
The shop is opposite to Sefwi Bekwai Senior High School and adjacent to the Green Roof Hotel on Sefwi Bekwai – Kumasi road. Hundreds of people troop to the scene to help salvage some movable properties from the scene.
The fire service personnel are yet to determine the cause of the fire. The affected traders, who could not control their emotions, broke down in tears.
The traders wondered where they would be able to secure funds to either restart their businesses or pay the loans they had obtained from banks and other financial institutions for their trading activities.
