The Ghana Association of Assembly Members (GAAM) has commended the government and the Minister for Local Government for the payment of five monthsโ allowance arrears to assembly members across the country.
The National President of GAAM, Frank Nelson Ackah, said the payment comes as a major relief to members who had endured months of delay, describing it as a positive step toward improving the welfare of local government representatives.
He noted that the move reflects the governmentโs commitment to strengthening grassroots governance.
He further called on the Ministry of Finance, the Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Assemblies (MMDAs), and other relevant institutions to work together to ensure the prompt and seamless release of the funds to all entitled members.
According to him, assembly members remain key drivers of development at the community level and must channel the support they receive into projects that directly improve the lives of residents.
Mr. Frank Nelson Ackah urged members to ensure that development efforts are visible and impactful within their electoral areas.
The GAAM President also acknowledged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government for what he described as its consistent attention to the welfare of public officials, stressing that such actions inspire confidence and renewed commitment among assembly members.
He emphasized the need for stronger cooperation between the central government and local assemblies to guarantee the effective implementation of development programs and the proper use of public resources.
Mr. Ackah noted that regular and timely payment of allowances plays a crucial role in motivating assembly members to carry out their responsibilities efficiently and to support policies aimed at promoting grassroots development.
He also encouraged members to uphold high standards of transparency and accountability, ensuring that government support translates into tangible improvements in areas such as infrastructure, education, and social services.
Additionally, he appealed to the Ministry of Local Government to sustain open and consistent engagement with assembly members, stressing that effective governance depends on mutual understanding and collaboration between national and local authorities.
In closing, GAAM reaffirmed its appreciation to the John Mahama administration and the Local Government Minister, and called on all stakeholders to maintain cooperation in the collective effort to advance community development and improve the welfare of citizens nationwide.
