Illegal miners have invaded the Anhwiaso East Forest Reserve near Asawinso ‘A’ in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality, leaving residents frustrated.

This came to light when the Concern Citizens Association of Asawinso ‘A’ hold a press conference on Tuesday, November 17, 2020, to register their displeasure about how the forest is demolished by the illegal miners.

The Group leader who doubles as the Assembly Member for Asawinso Electoral Area, Mr Frank Nelson Ackah, hinted that they have been witnessing massive illegal mining activities with not less than ten excavators spotted in the forest reserve.

According to him, all effort has been made through the security agencies and the Municipal Assembly to stop the destruction caused by the activities of illegal miners but proved futile.

He alleged that the illegal miners are riding on the shoulders of “big men” in the country.

“It’s alleged that some prominent personalities are masterminding the illegalities in the forest. It’s again alleged that some chiefs, some opinion leaders, some national security officials are also behind this illegal mining in the Forest Reserve.”

“We are much aware that the Regional Security Council arrested a Chinese in the forest about a month ago, but nothing has been done about it.”

“We are given a one-week ultimatum to the forestry commission, the mineral commission and the government to get all the excavators out of the Forest defiant of which we will demonstrate for the whole world to see.” Mr Frank Nelson Ackah told the media.
