The Member of Parliament for Sefwi Wiawso Constituency, Dr Kwaku Afriyie has revealed that he was denied the opportunity to serve as the running mate to former President John Agyekum Kufuor ahead of the 2000 general elections.

Dr Afriyie who doubles as Minister of State in Charge of the State Interest and Governance Authority (SIGA), disclosed this during his campaign exercise held in Sefwi Asawinso in the Sefwi Wiawso Constituency on Thursday, November 19.

According to him, he was denied for a reason that he (Dr Kwaku Afriyie) and former President John Agyekum Kufuor belonged to the Akan territory.

He said Former President Kufour appointed Alhaji Aliu Mahama over him because the New Patriotic Party (NPP), wanted to also pull enormous votes from the northern part of the country to secure a victory in the 2000 general elections.

However, for a political party to win elections in Ghana, it has to record gigantic votes from all portions of our motherland.

Former President John Agyekum Kufour and his then running mate, Alhaji Aliu Mahama defeated NDC’s candidate Prof John Evans Atta Mills and Mr Martin Amidu (running mate) in that very election on runoff.

Meanwhile, Dr Kwaku Afriyie served as the Minister of Health between 2001 and 2004 under former President John Agyekum Kufour’s administration.

Currently, the President of the Republic, Nana Akufo-Addo is a native of the Southern Territory whilst his Vice President, Alhaji Dr Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia is an innate of the Northern Zone.
