The Western North Regional Deputy Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Alexander Hedidor, has urged Ghanaians to embrace the true essence of independence rather than merely focusing on its ceremonial aspects.
His comments come in response to the government’s decision to move Ghana’s 68th Independence Day celebration from Independence Square to the Presidency as a cost-cutting measure.
Announcing the decision at a press conference, the spokesperson for the presidency and Minister of State in charge of government communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, explained that this move aims to reduce expenses and protect the public purse.
Speaking on Ehan FM’s morning show, hosted by Little Angel, Alexander Hedidor emphasized that the government is not erasing the nation’s history but rather taking a pragmatic approach to address Ghana’s financial constraints.
He noted that the country is grappling with numerous challenges, and funds that would have been spent on an elaborate Independence Day celebration could be channeled into critical development initiatives.
He also criticized the practice of rotating the celebrations across different regions, describing it as unnecessary and, in some cases, even dangerous. Citing last year’s event in the Eastern Region, he recalled the tragic loss of a military officer and the collapse of about 60 people due to extreme conditions.
He commended the government for taking a more cautious and financially responsible approach, which he believes will prevent such incidents in the future.
Alexander Hedidor stressed that true patriotism should not be measured by parades and grand ceremonies but by the actions and attitudes of citizens.
The Western North Regional Deputy Communications Officer for the National Democratic Congress urged Ghanaians to demonstrate loyalty, responsibility, and a commitment to national development.
He further called on the public to support the government’s decision and embrace a more meaningful way of celebrating Independence Day—one that focuses on the nation’s progress rather than just its pageantry.
