Convener of the Media Coalition Against Illegal Mining, Dr. Ken Ashigbey, has strongly urged the government to jail foreign nationals caught engaging in illegal mining activities in Ghana, instead of simply deporting them.
Speaking on GTV’s Breakfast Show, Dr. Ashigbey said deporting such offenders without punishing them sends the wrong message to the world — that Ghana is a safe haven for illegal miners.
“Deporting them without punishment tells them Ghana is a safe haven for illegal activities,” he warned on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
Dr. Ashigbey also called on the government to declare a state of emergency in areas heavily affected by illegal mining, also known as galamsey.
He explained that these areas are facing serious damage to natural resources such as rivers and farmlands, and the activities are endangering the lives of citizens.
According to him, armed groups and even foreign mercenaries are now protecting illegal miners, making it more difficult to stop the menace.
He believes a state of emergency in the worst-hit regions would give the President the authority to take decisive action to restore order.
“This is not about the whole country — just the areas where illegal mining is out of control. We must act now to save both our present and our future,” he said.
Dr. Ashigbey urged the public to continue speaking out and supporting the fight against galamsey.
He also called on the President to review existing policies and take bold steps to end the destruction caused by illegal mining.
