The Western North Regional Minister, Wilbert Petty Brentum, has issued a stern warning to individuals engaged in illegal mining activities, particularly those operating in forest reserves and water bodies.
He emphasized that when caught, no amount of pleading will save them from the consequences of their actions.
The Minister made this strong declaration as part of his commitment to protecting the environment and ensuring a sustainable future for generations to come.
Speaking at an official event, the Minister stressed the devastating effects of illegal mining, commonly known as ‘galamsey,’ on the region’s natural resources.
He stated that illegal miners who continue to destroy water bodies and degrade forest reserves should prepare to face the full force of the law.
“We must protect our environment for future generations. The illegal mining activities are causing irreparable damage to our lands and water sources. When caught, no amount of pleading will save you. We will enforce the law to the fullest,” Hon. Wilbert Petty Brentum asserted.
The Minister made these remarks on Thursday, March 27, during his speech as the Guest Speaker at the opening of the first-ever Community Relations Office for Ghana Bauxite Company in Awaso.
The Minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to combating illegal mining activities, stressing that law enforcement agencies will intensify efforts to clamp down on perpetrators.
He called on all community members, traditional leaders, and relevant authorities to collaborate in the fight against galamsey to preserve the region’s rich natural resources.
“Illegal mining has been a major challenge in the Western North Region, and we must all come together to fight it. We cannot allow a few individuals to destroy our environment for personal gains. It is time to act decisively,” he emphasized.
