Tikobo DA Basic School, established in 1976, has been serving many communities and villages.
However, the school still lacks proper classroom infrastructure, creating a serious concern for community members. With a student population of over 250, the school struggles with inadequate facilities and insufficient teaching staff.
The existing classroom structure, which has been in use for over two decades, accommodates Classes 3 to 6. Unfortunately, Classes 1 and 2 do not have a dedicated classroom, forcing them to combine with Classes 3 and 4.
This situation disrupts learning, especially during the rainy season when classes must be halted for the safety of pupils.
Additionally, the structure harbors dangerous reptiles such as snakes, scorpions, and lizards, posing a risk to students and teachers alike.
Despite these challenges, the pupils of Tikobo DA Basic School have defied the odds, excelling in academic activities and competitions. The school emerged as the best in the USAID Early Grade Reading Program for the Patakro Circuit and won the 2023 Inter-School Quiz Competition twice before representing the circuit in the district finals in Bodi.
Many parents in the community feel neglected, with those who can afford it transferring their children to Amoaya, located 3km away.
However, a large number of families lack the means to do so, leaving their children to endure the poor learning conditions at Tikobo DA Basic School.
The school’s woes are further compounded by a severe shortage of teachers. Currently, only three teachers handle all students from KG to JHS 3.
The lack of educators has led to a boycott by KG pupils, as there has been no assigned teacher since 2021.
Speaking to Flip News, Mr. Kwame Dakpo, the SMC Chairman, appealed to the Ghana Education Service (GES), the Ministry of Education (MoE), and the government to urgently address the dire situation before disaster strikes.
He expressed deep concern over the lack of proper infrastructure and the inadequate number of teachers, stressing the urgent need for intervention to ensure a safer and more conducive learning environment for the pupils.
