Elluokrom, a community with a population of over 2,300, continues to live without a functional police presence 22 years after residents collectively funded and completed a police station intended to improve security in the area.

The facility, if opened, is expected to serve Elluokrom and more than 20 surrounding communities. However, despite its completion, the police station has remained locked and unused for over two decades, leaving residents vulnerable to rising criminal activities.

In an exclusive interview with Sefwinews, the Assembly Member for the Elluokrom Electoral Area, Louis Afful, expressed deep frustration over the prolonged delay in operationalising the facility.

“The Elluokrom Police Station has been here for 22 years, yet it has never been opened for the people,” he said.

According to Mr. Afful, the community has spent over ₵120,000 (about ¢1.2 billion in old cedis) on the construction of the police station through communal labour and financial contributions.

He disclosed that all efforts to get the facility opened have so far yielded no results, despite repeated appeals to Members of Parliament, District Chief Executives, and the Ghana Police Service.

“We have reached out to MPs, DCEs, and the police authorities several times, but nothing has come out of it,” he lamented.

Mr. Afful noted that the continued absence of a police station has worsened the security situation in Elluokrom, with cases of theft and drug abuse becoming rampant.

“There are many criminal cases here, but because there is no police station around, controlling crime has become very difficult,” he explained.

He further stated that the unresolved issue has caused him personal distress in his role as an Assembly Member.

“I have suffered as an Assemblyman because of this police station issue. The people keep asking questions, and I have no answers for them,” he added.

The Assembly Member, on behalf of the chiefs and people of Elluokrom, has therefore made a renewed appeal to the government to intervene urgently.

“We are pleading with the government to come and commission the Elluokrom Police Station in 2026 so that our people can finally benefit from the facility,” he appealed.

Residents believe that opening the police station will significantly improve security, curb crime and drug abuse, and bring lasting relief to Elluokrom and its neighbouring communities.
