Penalty Drama! Referee overturns decision as Goldstars held by Hearts

A controversial refereeing decision took center stage as Bibiani Goldstars and Accra Hearts of Oak battled to a 1-1 draw at Duns Park on Sunday, March 23, 2025.

The game was marked by a contentious refereeing decision that has since become the focal point of discussions among fans and analysts.

The pivotal moment occurred in the second half when referee Foster Bastiours awarded a penalty to Bibiani Gold Stars after consulting with his assistant.

Hearts of Oak defender Osei Asibe was shown a yellow card, seemingly confirming the infraction.

However, in a surprising turn, Bastiours revisited the decision, consulted his assistant once more, and ultimately overturned the penalty call, allowing play to continue. This sequence of events led to heated reactions from players and supporters alike.

Despite the controversy, Bibiani Gold Stars managed to break the deadlock in the 79th minute when Gideon Anaba successfully converted a penalty, putting the home side ahead.

The lead was short-lived, as Hearts of Oak’s Stephen Appiah found the equalizer in the 92nd minute, ensuring the visitors left with a point.

As of March 24, 2025, the Ghana Premier League standings are as follows:

  1. Asante Kotoko – 37 points (20 matches)
  2. Bibiani Gold Stars – 37 points (20 matches)
  3. Hearts of Oak – 36 points (20 matches)
  4. Heart of Lions FC – 34 points (20 matches)
  5. Bechem United – 33 points (20 matches)

This result leaves Bibiani Goldstars in second place, narrowly trailing league leaders Asante Kotoko on goal difference, while Hearts of Oak remain in third, just one point behind.

This fixture has historically been competitive. Notably, earlier in the season, Bibiani Goldstars secured a 1-0 victory over Hearts of Oak at the University of Ghana Stadium, a win that solidified their position at the top of the league standings at the time.

Bibiani Goldstars will aim to capitalize on their strong position and potentially overtake Asante Kotoko, while Hearts of Oak will seek to close the gap and challenge for the top spot.

Fans and analysts will undoubtedly keep a close eye on how these developments influence the dynamics at the top of the table in the coming weeks.
