Two teenagers perish in abandoned galamsey pit at Sefwi Abrokofe

Two teenagers, suspected to be involved in illegal mining activities, lost their lives in a mining pit at Sefwi Abrokofe in the Sefwi Juaboso District of the Western North Region.

The deceased have been identified as Kwabena Bour, aged 19, and Oliver Ntaadu (Junior), aged 15.

According to Modestus Appiah, uncle of Oliver Ntaadu (Junior), the tragedy unfolded when his nephew and six other boys ventured into the abandoned galamsey site in search of gold.

Upon completing their work, they attempted to swim and cross the body of water. While five of them managed to cross safely, Junior found himself trapped in the deeper section. In a valiant attempt to rescue him, Kwabena Bour also plunged into the depths but tragically met the same fate.

The community has been left reeling from the loss as authorities organize efforts to recover Junior’s body, which remains submerged.

Appiah clarified that the water body in question is not a river but an abandoned Chinese galamsey pit, highlighting the dangers posed by such neglected mining sites.

The body of Kwabena Bour has been retrieved and transported to the Sefwi Juaboso Government Hospital for further procedures, pending an autopsy.
