A Juaboso-based youth activist, Ahenkorah Bartholomew, has raised serious concerns over the apparent absence of speed monitoring devices on major roads across Ghana, calling on authorities to take urgent action to address the growing menace of speeding and road crashes.
According to him, the increasing rate of road accidents in the country is largely driven by excessive speeding — a situation he believes could be significantly reduced through the deployment and effective use of functional speed detection devices.
Mr. Ahenkorah has therefore appealed to President John Dramani Mahama and the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwame Governs Agbodza, to treat the issue as a matter of urgency by implementing stricter road safety measures and enforcing existing traffic regulations.
He questioned the whereabouts of speed monitoring equipment across the country and whether such devices are being actively utilized to promote discipline among drivers.
The youth activist also expressed disappointment in what he described as weak enforcement of road traffic regulations by the police, particularly in relation to drivers’ appearance and general compliance with safety standards.
In an interview with the media, Mr. Ahenkorah highlighted that many commercial and private drivers operate their vehicles without essential safety equipment, especially fire extinguishers, in clear violation of national road safety regulations.
He described the situation as unfortunate and called for intensified inspections and enforcement exercises to ensure full compliance with safety requirements.
Mr. Ahenkorah emphasized that protecting lives on the road must be treated as a national priority and urged all relevant institutions to collaborate effectively in promoting responsible driving and safeguarding the public.
