A tragic accident on the Takoradi to Agona Nkwanta highway in the Western Region of Ghana has claimed the lives of nine persons with over four others battling for life.
The accident occurred on Saturday, May 10, 2025, between 5:00pm and 6:00pm.
The accident is reported to have occurred when a passenger vehicle loaded from Mankesim to Tarkwa collided with a truck from the opposite direction.
The injured victims are currently receiving treatment at the Takoradi Government Hospital and the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital whilst the bodies of the deceased have since been deposited at the mortuary of the Effia-Nkwanta Hospital.
Charlotte Kaku, a trader at the spot where the accident occurred told Nhyiraba Paa Kwesi Simpson, the host of Connect FM’s Omanbapa Morning Show that the two vehicles involved in the accident collided in an attempt to overtake an Abidjan bound truck.
“The accident occurred around the Kofi Tiaa-Egyam stretch of the highway. The Mankessim passenger vehicle collided with another truck from Tarkwa after an attempt to overtake an Abidjan truck failed. The two vehicles involved fell into a pit, police officers came around to assist the situation and we were able to rescue a few”, she indicated.
According to her, the driver of the Mankesim bus died instantly whilst the rest passed at the Effia Nkwanta Regional Hospital.
“We have been able to identify some of the deceased passengers but there are others who have not been able to speak due to the critical nature of their conditions. The people who came to help ended up stealing their phones from the accident scene, so we are having challenges tracing their families, there is a pastor whose body has been deposited at the morgue, but we are yet to know his identity. Among the deceased include a woman and her son whom we are told were attending the funeral of her late husband and a young lady I believe is an SHS student”, she added.
Efforts are still underway to trace the relatives of other victims.
