The Catholic Bishop of Sefwi Wiawso and Western North Regional Chairman of the Peace Council, Most Reverend Samuel Nkuah Boateng, has added his voice to the ongoing fight against illegal mining, popularly known asย Galamsey, which continues to wreak havoc on the environment and the nationโ€™s development.

Speaking on the recent statement issued by the Ghana Catholic Bishopsโ€™ Conference, which described illegal mining as one of the gravest afflictions of our time, Bishop Nkuah Boateng emphasized that the Church will not relent until the fight against Galamsey is won.

Responding to calls from some groups for the declaration of a state of emergency to tackle the menace, he stressed that what the government needs to do is to put in place effective and lasting measures to end illegal mining.

He further urged the countryโ€™s leadership to adopt responsible mining practices that balance economic benefits with environmental protection.

The Bishop also called for a collaborative approach in combating Galamsey, encouraging Ghanaiansโ€”especially media personalitiesโ€”to be bold in speaking out against the destructive activity.

According to him, winning the fight against illegal mining requires collective responsibility, firm action, and unwavering commitment from both leaders and citizens.
