The Government of Ghana has announced a GHยข400 increase per 64kg bag in the cocoa producer price for the 2025/2026 season, following the GHยข128 adjustment in August 2025.
This brings the official farmgate price to GHยข3,625 per bag, up from GHยข3,100 for the 2024/2025 crop season.
Earlier this year, the Centre for Development Integrity Africa (CDI-Africa) projected that the sharp appreciation of the cedi from GHยข14.75/USD in 2024 to about GHยข10.25/USD in the first quarter of 2025 would limit the scope for a major price increase despite record-high global cocoa prices.
CDI-Africa estimated a moderate farmgate price of GHยข3,320โ3,400 per bag as an economically responsible outcome in July 2025.
The governmentโs bold decision to exceed these expectations, raising the farmgate price by an additional GHยข400 per bag, reflects a strong commitment to farmer welfare, rural livelihoods, and stability in the cocoa sector.
Executive Director of CDI-Africa, Joseph Kwesi Appiah, stated: โThis increase is not just about figures; it is about dignity and fairness for our cocoa farmers. By going beyond cautious forecasts, the Government has proven that farmer welfare is a priority. At CDI-Africa, we will continue to provide data-driven policy insights to ensure that Ghanaโs real sectors and livelihood empowerment remain resilient and equitable.โ
While commending government, CDI-Africa stressed that long-term sustainability requires:
- Expanding local value addition to retain more value in the cocoa industry,
- Diversifying exports beyond dry cocoa beans,
- Strengthening fiscal and institutional reforms within COCOBOD, and
- Enhancing transparency and resilience across the cocoa value chain.
According to CDI-Africa, farmers deserve not only fair prices today but also a stable and transformative cocoa economy that secures their future.
