Tension gripped Kambali, a suburb of Wa in the Upper West Region, on the night of Tuesday, October 28, 2025, after a young man identified as Jalilu, popularly known as Jupita, was reportedly shot in the leg by a police officer.
The incident occurred at a prostitution hub that also operates as a nightclub, following a misunderstanding between the victim and a sex worker.
According to eyewitness accounts, the confrontation happened around 7 p.m. when Jalilu, said to be affiliated with the Jamaica Youth Group, a popular youth advocacy movement in Wa, allegedly had a dispute with a sex worker at the club.
The altercation reportedly escalated into a physical fight, prompting police intervention.
However, what was expected to be a routine effort to restore calm turned chaotic when one of the officers allegedly fired his weapon, injuring Jalilu in the leg.
Following the shooting, angry youth took to the streets, burning tyres and blocking roads on JJ Rawlings High Street and Wadea Street in protest against what they described as police brutality.
Some residents also expressed concern over the growing sex trade in Kambali, which they say has led to rising incidents of crime and violence.
One eyewitness, who requested anonymity, recounted that the confrontation began when a thief being pursued ran into the nightclub.
“I heard a thief was being chased and ran into the club. Jalilu went in to look for him but ended up exchanging words with one of the foreign sex workers. Things escalated quickly, and she was assaulted and dragged into a nearby gutter. Later, some members of the Jamaica Youth Group stormed the place and vandalized properties after the owner of Maxixco Gardens called the police,” the eyewitness narrated.
In the aftermath of the shooting, police presence has been intensified around Maxixco Gardens, the facility at the center of the incident.
Many of the sex workers, believed to be foreigners, reportedly fled the area in tricycles, locally known as “Camboo”, to undisclosed locations.
