The Member of Parliament (MP) for Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai, Bright Asamoah Brefo, has promised to address growing concerns from local communities about the impact of mining operations by Asante Gold Corporation.
The MP’s intervention follows a recent peaceful demonstration by residents of Bibiani Old Town and Zongo, who expressed dissatisfaction with the company’s failure to resettle them before commencing mining activities.
The demonstration, which occurred in January 2025, was triggered by the company’s continued mining operations in close proximity to the community, despite previous promises made five years ago to relocate the residents.
The blasting and ongoing mining activities have raised significant safety and environmental concerns among the affected communities.
During a meeting with the community on Saturday, February 1, several critical issues were discussed:
Resettlement Delays: Community members reiterated the company’s failure to resettle them to a safer location, despite a prior commitment to do so before the start of mining activities. Residents have expressed concern over the ongoing risks to their lives and property due to the proximity of mining operations.
Environmental and Health Impacts: The residents raised alarm over pollution from the mining activities, including the release of dust, fumes, and hazardous chemicals. These pollutants have been linked to various health issues in the community, particularly respiratory problems.
Lack of Employment: Despite the presence of Asante Gold’s operations, many young people in the community with relevant skills have not been employed by the company. The residents suggested that the company could offer opportunities for small-scale mining using its abandoned pits or waste dumps to help alleviate the high unemployment rate in the area.
In response to the community’s concerns, the Member of Parliament for Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai, Bright Asamoah Brefo, praised the residents for their peaceful protest and commitment to addressing the issues through legal channels.
He assured them that their grievances would be taken seriously and vowed to engage with Asante Gold Corporationto find a solution that benefits both the community and the company.
Bright Asamoah Brefo also expressed his intention to visit other affected communities, including Zongo, to gather further information before holding formal discussions with the mining company.
The Legislator emphasized the need for an urgent and constructive resolution to the ongoing issues faced by mining communities in Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai.
