The Ghana Medical Association (GMA) has called for an immediate meeting with the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, to discuss the suspension of the Vehicle Importation Tax Waiver for public sector medical doctors and dentists.
This waiver, part of the Conditions of Service agreement signed on March 27, 2024, was supposed to take effect in July 2024. However, its delayed implementation has caused frustration among members of the association.
In a joint statement issued by GMA President Dr. Frank Serebour and General Secretary Dr. Richard Selormey, the association expressed deep concern over the abrupt halt of the policy, which has left some doctors unable to clear their imported vehicles at the port. The statement warned that the situation could lead to the confiscation of these vehicles if left unresolved.
“Members may recall that in our communication dated February 19, 2025, we advised those intending to use the waiver to temporarily suspend their applications while we worked towards a resolution,” the statement read.
GMA further disclosed that the Minister of Health had been formally notified in a letter dated February 20, 2025, yet there has been no headway in resolving the matter.
“As a matter of urgency, the National Executive Council has resolved to seek a meeting with the Minister to address the issue and ensure that the waiver is reinstated, especially for members whose vehicles remain stranded at the ports,” the statement added.
In the meantime, GMA has scheduled an emergency meeting following the engagement with the Minister to determine the next steps if a resolution is not reached.
