Ghana went into its 9th Presidential and Parliamentary elections under the 4th Republic on December 7, 2024. Sefwinews takes you through all the 9 constituencies within the Western North Region and their members of Parliament. NDC managed to won 8 out of the 9 constituencies in the region.
Sefwi Wiawso Constituency
Sefwi Wiawso, the regional capital of the Region, has a total voter population of 87,505. Kofi Benteh Afful of the NDC won back the seat after losing it in the 2016 general election to Dr. Kwaku Afriyie of the NPP. Kofi Benteh Afful polled 33,656 votes, representing 57.29% of the total votes cast, to win the election. His closest contender, Festus Bumakama Agyapong of the NPP, garnered 24,926 votes, representing 42.43%. Independent candidate Ababio Veronica managed to get 164 votes, which represented 0.28%.
Bibiani/Anwiaso/Bekwai Constituency
The Bibiani/Anwiaso/Bekwai Constituency has the highest voter population in the region, with 99,446 registered voters. Bright Asamoah Brefo of the NDC pulled off the biggest surprise in the region by snatching the Bibiani seat for the NDC, a seat the party had not won since 1996.
The NDC had lost the Bibiani seat to the NPP’s Alfred Obeng Boateng in the 2020 election by a margin of 61%. However, Hon Brefo secured 33,732 votes, representing 51.51% of the total votes cast, while Alfred Obeng-Boateng of the NPP garnered 31,749 votes, representing 48.49%.
Bia West Constituency
Bia West is considered one of the safest seats for the ruling party, the NDC. Since its creation from the Juaboso Constituency, the NDC has consistently won the constituency with significant margins. The Bia West Constituency has the 4th highest voter population in the region, with 63,840 registered voters. Mustarpha Amadu Tanko of the NDC convincingly won the polls against the Bia West DCE, Bernard Blay.
Many had expected Bernard Blay to pull off a surprise by snatching the seat for the NPP, considering his performance in the 2020 election against the then-incumbent MP, Dr. Augustine Tawiah. However, Mustapha Amadu Tanko secured 27,387 votes, representing 69.86% of the valid votes cast, while Hon Bernard Blay garnered 11,815 votes, representing 30.14%.
Bia East Constituency
The Bia East Constituency, carved out of the Bia West Constituency in 2012 by President Atta Mills, has consistently been won by the NDC since its inception. Richard Acheampong has remained the only MP for the constituency, entering his 4th term.
The Bia East Constituency has a voter population of 34,672. Hon Richard Acheampong of the NDC polled 12,948 votes, representing 60.79%, while the NPP candidate, Nicholas Yayin Niber, the current DCE of the District, managed to get 8,357 votes, representing 39.21%.
Juaboso Constituency
The Juaboso Constituency has a voter population of 58,510, the 4th highest in the region. In the 2024 Parliamentary Election, NDC’s Kwabena Mintah Akandoh emerged victorious with 52.48% of the total votes (20,724 votes), securing a clear majority. The NPP’s Alexander Ampaabeng secured 47.29% (18,672 votes) of the votes cast, while the CPP candidate, Hon Oppong Ernestina, garnered a paltry 92 votes, representing 0.23%.
Bodi Constituency
Historical voting trends in Bodi demonstrate a strong NDC presence since its inception. The Bodi Constituency is one of the smallest constituencies in the region, with 35,002 registered voters. In the 2024 Parliamentary Election, NDC’s Ahi Sampson emerged victorious with 58.64% of the total votes (13,086 votes), securing a clear majority. The NPP’s Andoh Nicholas secured 41.36% (9,230 votes) of the votes cast.
Akontombra Constituency
Akomtombra seat is one of the three seats the NDC snatch from the NPP in this year Elections. The constituency have a voter population of 42,367.
The NPP won the seat from NDC in 2016 after some misunderstanding within the NDC which saw then incumbent MP, Herold Kobina contesting as independent candidate.
Former DCE for Akontombra, Pius Kwame Nkuah, defeated the former 2nd Deputy Majority Chief Whip, Alexander Tetteh, with 16,693 votes representing 55.31% whilst the incumbent MP, Alex Tetteh only manage with 13,486 which stands at 44.69%.
Suaman Constituency
The Suaman Constituency is the smallest in the Region with a voter registration of 24,710. Historical voting trends in Suaman demonstrate show a strong NDC presence since 1992. In 2020, the constituency voted 51.19% for NDC compared to NPP’s 48.81%.
The 2024 election marks a significant shift where NPP snatch the seat from the NDC.
Surprisingly, it’s the only seat for the Npp in the Western North Region.
In the 2024 Parliamentary Election in the Suaman constituency of the Western North region, NPP’s Addy Frederick emerged victorious with 52.17% of the total votes (9,027 votes) securing a clear majority. NDC’s Joseph Betino, secured 47.47% (8,214 votes) of the votes cast.
Aowin Constituency
The Aowin constituency, one of the three municipal assemblies in the Region have the 3rd highest voter population of 76,454. Historical voting trends in Aowin demonstrate show a strong NDC presence since 1992. The 2024 election continues the traditional voting.
In the 2024 Parliamentary Election in the Aowin constituency of the Western North region, NDC’s Oscar Ofori Larbi emerged victorious with 50.12% of the total votes (21,889 votes) securing a clear majority. NPP’s Abanga Yakubu Fusani, secured 49.88% (21,786 votes) of the votes cast.
