In a decisive move to combat illegal mining activities, the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, in collaboration with the Ministry of Defence, executed a joint operation that successfully drove out illegal miners from the Tano Anwia Forest Reserve in the Enchi Forest District of the Western North Region.
The operation, spearheaded by the Rapid Response Unit of the Forestry Commission and dedicated military personnel, resulted in the seizure of several pieces of heavy machinery, including excavators and bulldozers used in illegal mining activities.
This latest operation signals the government’s strengthened commitment to eradicating illegal mining and restoring the integrity of Ghana’s forest reserves.
Speaking on the success of the operation, the Minister for Lands and Natural Resources, Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, emphasized the government’s firm stance against illegal mining, commonly known as ‘galamsey.’
He stated, “Let this operation serve as a clear message to those who dare to challenge the resolve of our government. We will not relent, nor will we retreat, until every inch of our precious forest reserve is safeguarded.”
The minister further reiterated that the government remains steadfast in its mission to ensure the sustainability of the country’s natural resources.
He expressed deep appreciation to the combined task force for their dedication and professionalism in carrying out the operation.
“I extend my heartfelt appreciation to the combined task force for this successful operation. Their bravery and commitment are commendable,” he added.
Illegal mining has been a significant threat to Ghana’s forests and water bodies, with many reserves suffering from severe degradation due to unregulated mining activities.
The Tano Anwia Forest Reserve, which serves as a critical environmental buffer, has been one of the areas under serious threat from illegal mining.
The Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources has vowed to continue its rigorous enforcement actions to ensure that Ghana’s forests and water bodies remain protected for future generations.
The minister reaffirmed that the government will use all available resources to clamp down on perpetrators of illegal mining, calling on local communities to support these efforts by reporting suspicious activities to the authorities.
