Contractor Set to Resume Works on Sefwi Wiawso Astro Turf – MCE

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Sefwi Wiawso, Dominic Gyasi, has assured residents that work on the municipality’s stalled Astro Turf project is set to resume soon following the expected release of funds.

The Astro Turf project officially commenced on May 18, 2024, at the Roman Park in Sefwi Wiawso. However, construction activities were later halted due to delays in the release of funds under the Secondary Cities Support Programme, leading to the prolonged suspension of the project.

Speaking in an interview on June 9, Mr. Gyasi disclosed that the Municipal Assembly recently held discussions with relevant stakeholders to address challenges that have delayed the project for several months.

According to him, the engagement produced positive results, with assurances that funds under the Secondary Cities Support Programme will be released shortly to enable the contractor to return to site.

Mr. Gyasi stated that construction works would resume immediately after the contractor receives the necessary funds, stressing that the project remains an important development initiative for the municipality.

He explained that the delay was caused by outstanding payments owed to the contractor due to the non-release of funds under the programme, and not because the project had been abandoned.

“The project was not cancelled. Work was only suspended because the expected funding had not been released,” he clarified.

The Astro Turf project is one of the municipality’s key sports infrastructure developments and is expected to provide a modern facility for schools, football clubs, youth groups, and community sporting events upon completion.

The MCE acknowledged public concerns over the prolonged delay and appealed to residents to remain patient, expressing confidence that work would soon recommence.
