Newly promoted Ghana Premier League club Debibi United are close to securing the services of former Asante Kotoko striker Abdul Fatawu Safiu as they prepare for their first-ever top-flight campaign.
The experienced forward joined the club’s training session on Tuesday, July 28, as both parties continue discussions over a possible contract agreement.
If negotiations are completed successfully, Safiu is expected to become one of Debibi United’s biggest signings ahead of the new season.
The 32-year-old striker has endured difficult periods in recent years due to persistent injury challenges.
His expected return to Asante Kotoko earlier this year was cut short after medical examinations confirmed a serious knee ligament injury, leading to the cancellation of his contract. Safiu later underwent surgery and has been undergoing rehabilitation to regain full fitness.
Before his injury struggles, Safiu established himself as one of Ghana’s top attacking talents.
He emerged as the leading scorer in the 2019 NC Special Competition with 10 goals and was named Home-Based Player of the Year at the 2019 Ghana Football Awards.
During his first stint with Asante Kotoko, Safiu delivered impressive performances, scoring 13 goals in just 16 appearances while also gaining valuable experience in continental competitions.
His potential arrival forms part of Debibi United’s ambitious plans to build a competitive squad for their maiden Ghana Premier League season.
The club has already begun reinforcing the team, including the acquisition of defender Kwame Paul from Hohoe United.
