In a bold move signaling their frustration, the Humjibre community has threatened to boycott the upcoming 2024 general elections due to unresolved infrastructure issues, despite the DRIP (District Response Initiative Programme) initiative.
Residents of Humjibre, a farming enclave in the Bibiani Anhwiaso Bekwai Municipality, have long been plagued by inadequate road conditions that have severely impacted their daily lives.
Their discontent has reached a tipping point, prompting them to question why both current and previous governments have failed to address these pressing concerns despite their active participation in the electoral process.
The community’s ire extends beyond road issues. The CHPS compound (Community-Based Health Planning and Services) in Humjibre, which serves four surrounding communities, is in a deplorable state.
This has led to difficulties in retaining healthcare staff and exacerbates the challenges faced by patients seeking medical attention. The deteriorating condition of the facility has prompted concerns about its capacity to provide adequate healthcare.
Enock Happy Nkrumah, the Assembly Member for the Humjibre electoral area, expressed his dismay at the lack of response from both the municipal assembly and the Member of Parliament (MP).
“We have made countless appeals to the MCE and the MP, but nothing positive seems to come out of it. Boycotting the election may not be enough, but we shall do it to register our displeasure. It’s very disheartening how we have been treated, as if we aren’t part of the country,” Nkrumah said.
Additionally, Nkrumah highlighted urgent concerns regarding the Mouho M/A Junior High School, which is in a critical state of disrepair.
The school’s torn ceiling, leaking roof, and the presence of reptiles in classrooms have created hazardous learning conditions. The facility is forced to close during heavy rainfall due to these risks.
Enock Happy Nkrumah urged authorities to act swiftly to address these issues to prevent further deterioration and ensure a safe learning environment for the students.
