“Education and Discipline are key to success in football” – Coach Jerry Joseph

Coach Jerry Joseph Addai, an MPhil holder in Physical Education & Sports Studies (specialising in Sports Management and Administration) and Sports Head of Asawinso Senior High School, has emphasized that education and discipline remain the foundation for success in modern football.

Speaking on Raycof Sports Night with Kwame Adolf Asmah, he explained that football has evolved into a more technical and scientific discipline, requiring players to combine natural talent with formal education to progress in their careers.

According to him, without education, many young footballers struggle to understand coaching instructions, communicate effectively with teammates, and properly interpret professional contracts—factors that often limit their development in the sport.

He further noted that the modern game demands a strong understanding of nutrition, training routines, and lifestyle discipline, stressing that football today is “scientific,” and players must be conscious of what they eat, drink, and the timing of their habits to perform at their best.

Coach Joseph also referenced some of Ghana’s celebrated footballers, including members of the national team, the Black Stars, such as Asamoah Gyan, Sulley Muntari, André Ayew, and Adam Kwarasey, stating that discipline and commitment played a key role in their success at the highest level.

He expressed concern about challenges facing young talents in the region, including indiscipline, inadequate financial support, and the pressure to engage in side jobs such as okada and pragya riding, which often affects their attendance at training sessions.

Coach Joseph appealed to opinion leaders, wealthy individuals, and stakeholders within the community to support local football teams financially and structurally to help nurture and develop young talent.

He concluded that combining education with discipline is essential for building successful football careers and improving the overall standard of football in Ghana.
