Ghana midfielder Daniel-Kofi Kyereh has finally ended a long wait for competitive football, making his first senior appearance since February 2023 as VfL Osnabruck secured a win over Bochum in the 2. Bundesliga.
Kyereh came off the bench in the 66th minute and played 24 minutes, marking a significant milestone in his recovery from a devastating anterior cruciate ligament injury suffered during training at SC Freiburg in February 2023.
The injury ruled him out for nearly three years, with his last competitive appearance coming in a 2-0 Bundesliga defeat to VfB Stuttgart on February 11, 2023. During his rehabilitation, the 29-year-old faced a difficult period that he later described as making him question his future in football.
Kyereh joined Osnabrück as a free agent this summer after his contract with Freiburg expired, reuniting with head coach Timo Schultz, under whom he enjoyed the most productive spell of his career at FC St. Pauli.
His return to the pitch represents a remarkable comeback for the Ghana international, who has 18 caps for the Black Stars. Kyereh was part of Ghana’s 2022 World Cup squad and scored a memorable goal against South Korea in Qatar.
