Dr. Issahaku Tahiru Pushes For Constituency-Based Funding To Strengthen NPP

A Chartered Accountant and aspiring National Treasurer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Dr Issahaku Moomin Tahiru, has called for a constituency-based funding model to strengthen the party’s structures and improve its chances of returning to power in the 2028 general elections.

Speaking in an interview with Sefwinews while outlining his vision and policies for the National Treasurer position, Dr. Issahaku emphasized that the current centralized financial management system within the party limits the effectiveness of constituency and grassroots operations.

He proposed a system that would allow constituencies to retain a percentage of dues and contributions generated locally while remitting the remaining portion to the national headquarters.

According to him, such an arrangement would enable constituency executives to undertake day-to-day party activities without depending entirely on financial support from the national office.

“One thing that I intend bringing on board is a system of retention of dues so that a percentage of funds generated at the constituency level remains there to support local party activities, while the remaining portion is sent to the national headquarters,” he explained.

Dr. Issahaku noted that empowering constituency structures financially would make the party more active, vibrant, and visible throughout the year rather than only during election periods or major party programmes.

He further indicated that the national headquarters could use funds received from stronger constituencies to support areas facing budget deficits, thereby ensuring equitable distribution of resources across the country.

The National Treasurer hopeful also stressed the need for greater transparency and accountability in the management of party finances.

He revealed plans to introduce a real-time financial dashboard that would allow party members to monitor contributions and expenditures, helping to build confidence and trust in the system.

“Transparency is key. When party members know how their money is being used, they will willingly contribute to support the growth and development of the party,” he stated.

Dr. Issahaku further disclosed plans to provide financial literacy and management training for constituency treasurers to ensure proper handling of funds and enhance accountability at the grassroots level.

He argued that decentralizing the party’s financial system would reduce overreliance on a few major donors and encourage broader participation from ordinary party members.

The aspiring National Treasurer maintained that strengthening grassroots structures through sustainable financing is critical to rebuilding the NPP and positioning the party for victory in the next general election.

“Our ultimate goal is to bring the NPP back to power, and that can only be achieved when every branch and constituency is active, well-resourced, and fully involved in the party’s activities,” he added.
