President John Mahama has taken swift action to address the growing concerns of food shortages in Senior High Schools (SHS) across Ghana.
During a National Prayer and Thanksgiving Service in Accra, President Mahama acknowledged the challenges in providing adequate meals to students, stating, “We have a challenge currently with feeding students in secondary schools.”
To tackle this issue, President Mahama has instructed the Chief of Staff to work with the Ghana Education Service to distribute food supplies stored in warehouses in Tema.
“As a stopgap measure, I have asked the Chief of Staff to work with the Ghana Education Service to allocate and evacuate food that is currently held in warehouses in Tema.”
These supplies, initially imported to address past drought conditions, will be redirected to ensure students receive the nutrition they need, preventing any disruption to their education.
President Mahama reaffirmed his commitment to upholding the Free SHS policy, ensuring that logistical issues don’t hinder students’ access to education.
This move comes after warnings from the Conference of Heads of Assisted Senior High Schools (CHASS) about the severity of the food shortages, which led to appeals for parents to supplement their children’s meals.
The government’s rapid response aims to alleviate the burden on parents and school administrations, ensuring students’ nutritional needs are met.
This decisive action demonstrates President Mahama’s dedication to addressing the concerns of Ghana’s students and education sector.
