A member of the NDC Regional Communication Team, Emmanuel Martey, has outlined several developmental projects and government interventions currently ongoing in the Western North Region, stressing that the region continues to benefit significantly from the government’s “Big Push” agenda.
He noted that although Western North is one of the six newly created regions in Ghana, it remains richly endowed with natural resources and continues to attract major infrastructure and social intervention projects aimed at improving living conditions.
Speaking on regional development on the “Kro Yi Mu Nsem” programme on Sefwinews with Nana Asare Kesse, Emmanuel Martey highlighted several ongoing road projects across the region.
These include the Akontombra to Dadieso road project covering 22.3 kilometres, the Perchi–Kwodjor–Enchi road project spanning 62 kilometres in two lots, as well as the Camp 15 (Bia East) Adabokrom to Ahafo Region road and the Adjoafua to Oseikwajokrom road being executed by Semens Company Limited.
He also cited the Elubo to Enchi road as part of efforts to improve transport connectivity and boost economic activity in the region.
On education and infrastructure, Martey disclosed that 20 percent of the District Assemblies Common Fund has been used to complete legacy projects, while about 70 percent of school projects across the region are currently ongoing.
He added that all District and Municipal Assemblies have been directed to construct new three-unit classroom blocks using the Common Fund.
Touching on healthcare, he commended the Health Minister, the Regional Chairman, and the Regional Minister for their contributions toward efforts to establish a Western North Hospital Regional project, which is expected to be delivered in the region later this year.
He further stated that a Nursing and Midwifery Training School is under construction in the Juaboso District.
He said Western North has been selected as a beneficiary of the Free Primary Health Care initiative due to the predominantly rural nature of many communities in the region.
According to him, each district is expected to construct at least two CHPS compounds annually, complete with accommodation for health personnel.
Emmanuel Martey also stated that the government has commenced the construction of 24-hour markets in every district and municipality across the region.
He explained that the proposed markets would include police posts, daycare centres, KVIP facilities, and clinics to enhance commercial activity and improve public safety.
On youth empowerment and employment, he said the government’s apprenticeship programme will provide industrial machines to trainers to strengthen skills development.
According to him, the introduction of the Adwuma Wura initiative has supported about 250 individuals financially to establish their own businesses.
He further noted that about one million youth are expected to benefit from the Digital Skills Programme, known as CODED, with districts including Bibiani, Sefwi Wiawso, Bodi, Juaboso, and Akontombra already participating. He added that 50 laptops have been supplied to support training activities.
Mr. Martey said the region has also seen the establishment of new government offices, including the Passport Office, Gaming Commission, and Minerals Development Fund offices.
On road infrastructure challenges, he acknowledged the poor condition of roads such as the Boako to Asafo Asawinso stretch and the Villa Boakye to Nyamebekyere road, which have contributed to several accidents. He assured that the relevant assemblies are actively working to address the situation.
He further noted an improvement in police visibility across the region, which he said has enhanced security in communities.
On water resources, Emmanuel Martey praised the Blue Water Project, stating that it has significantly reduced water turbidity levels compared to previous years.
He also highlighted the community cooperative mining initiative, which he said is helping residents transition from illegal mining to responsible and regulated mining practices.
