Dr. Alexander Ampaabeng, the New Patriotic Party (NPP) 2024 Parliamentary Candidate for the Juaboso constituency in the Western North Region, has been appointed as the Deputy Minister for Finance.
This announcement comes as part of President Akufo-Addo’s efforts to bolster the country’s economic leadership.
Dr. Ampaabeng, a seasoned expert in accounting, finance, fiscal policy, and economics, brings a wealth of experience to his new role. Prior to his appointment, he played a pivotal role in advancing the Natural Resource Governance Institute (NRGI) Ghana program.
With 17 years of professional experience, his expertise spans various sectors, including academia, non-profit organizations, and government advisory roles.
Before joining NRGI, Dr. Ampaabeng served as a fiscal policy specialist for Oxfam in Ghana, where he collaborated closely with the Ministry of Finance to shape tax and fiscal policies.
His contributions were instrumental in influencing Ghana’s annual national budget and fostering dialogue between civil society organizations and the government on economic matters.
Dr. Ampaabeng’s impressive track record also includes teaching roles at institutions in the United Kingdom, such as Birmingham City University, the University of Coventry, the University of Warwick, and the University of Birmingham.
Additionally, he founded the ‘Tax Strategy Team’ and the ‘CSO Budget Forum’ at Oxfam, initiatives aimed at mobilizing civil society and enhancing public participation in fiscal decision-making processes.
Moreover, Dr. Ampaabeng’s advocacy efforts extended to the media landscape with the establishment of the ‘Ghana Tax Dialogue,’ a weekly radio and national TV show dedicated to discussing tax policies and economic issues.
His commitment to promoting transparency and accountability in the extractive sector earned him recognition as a key voice in international forums organized by institutions such as the UN, the IMF, the World Bank, OECD, and ECOWAS.
Dr. Ampaabeng’s academic qualifications include a Ph.D. in Accounting and Finance, an M.B.A. in Financial Management, an M.Sc. in Accounting And Finance, and a PGCE in Business.
His multifaceted background and dedication to advancing Ghana’s economic agenda make him a valuable addition to the Ministry of Finance.
In light of this appointment, Dr. Ampaabeng expressed his gratitude for the opportunity to serve the nation in this capacity and pledged to work diligently to contribute to Ghana’s economic growth and development.
Meanwhile, in a related development, Mrs. Abena Osei-Asare has been appointed as the Minister of State at the Finance Ministry, succeeding Mohammed Amin Adam, who has assumed the role of the substantive Finance Minister following the departure of Ken Ofori-Atta from office on February 14, 2024.
